Eiren Caffall is a writer and musician. Her work on loss, oceans, and extinction has appeared in Orion, Guernica, The LA Review of Books, and Al Jazeera. She received a 2023 Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant, a Social Justice News Nexus fellowship, a 3Arts Make a Wave grant, and her novel was a finalist for the Gotham Prize. Her books include the memoir The Mourner’s Bestiary and the novel All the Water in the World.

The First Time is a live lit and music series recorded at Martyrs’ in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood. Each reader tells a true first tale, followed by a cover of the storyteller’s choosing, performed by our house band: The First Time Three.
